Eliminating Dietary Fats Can Stop and Reverse Type 2 Diabetes

In his book, “Dr. Neal Barnard’s Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes without Drugs”, Dr Barnard explains that consuming fatty food is the root cause of type 2 diabetes (T2D). Let’s recall that type 2 diabetes is a condition by which body cells do not properly absorb glucose, which then accumulates in the blood stream and leads to other illnesses.

He explains that fat naturally enters cells and are burned for energy. But in some people, the fat within cells is not properly burned, and its accumulation (within cells) interferes with the process by which insulin signals the cells to let glucose in. T2D treatments consist of controlling insulin and glucose, but they do not solve the problem. However, a diet low in fats does. And this is not related to body fat; very slim people can have the problem where fat is not properly burned within cells, which leads to T2D later in life.Studies have shown that eating high amount of fats not only results in excessive amounts of fat within cells, but it further reduces the inability for cells to burn it. It’s a problem that only worsens as time goes by, thereby requiring more medication to treat the problem and further medication to treat side effects of other problems (such as high blood pressure).

Although the condition is indeed genetic in part, a analogy can be made with cold viruses. When exposed to them, some get sick, some sicker, and some don’t. It’s a matter of their ability to fight off the disease, which is tied up to their genes. But people who follow strict hygiene (by washing their hands often for example) and stay away from sick people (who should actually be the ones staying away), the risk of getting a cold is greatly reduced, if not eliminated, regardless of their genes. The same goes for type 2 diabetes: by staying away from fatty food (animal products and oils), few develop type 2 diabetes despite a predisposition for it.

There are many ways to cut fats off a diet. Whether it’s by limiting calories (i.e. reduce the amount of food consumed), or choosing lean meat, none produced better results (i.e. reversing the disease) that entirely eliminating animal products and extra oils. Plus such a diet also reverses many heart diseases.
